Your tyres are the only part of the vehicle touching the road. Pressure, tread, damage and load all affect how safely they can do their job.

Why this matters

A well-serviced vehicle can still be unsafe on neglected tyres. Grip, braking and steering all depend on contact patches roughly the size of your palm.

Your tyres are your contact with the road

Four relatively small contact patches connect your vehicle to the road. Those contact patches have to maintain grip, support the vehicle's weight, transfer braking forces, transfer steering inputs, handle acceleration and disperse water from the road surface. A tyre problem can therefore affect much more than comfort.

Tyre pressure matters

Tyre pressure affects the way the tyre contacts the road and how the vehicle responds. Too little pressure can contribute to excessive heat build-up, poor handling, increased rolling resistance, uneven wear and an increased risk of tyre failure. Too much pressure can also affect handling and the tyre's contact with the road. The correct pressure is the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure, not simply the maximum pressure printed on the tyre sidewall.

Where do I find the correct pressure?

Don't guess. Check the vehicle owner's manual, the manufacturer's tyre-pressure label or placard, and any manufacturer-provided vehicle information. The recommended pressure may differ between the front and rear tyres and may change depending on the vehicle's loading condition.

The number printed on the tyre sidewall is not necessarily the recommended operating pressure for your vehicle.

Check pressure when the tyres are cold

Tyre pressure changes with temperature. For an accurate routine pressure check, measure when the tyres are cold, following the vehicle manufacturer's guidance. A useful habit is to check tyre pressure regularly rather than waiting until the vehicle feels different. Do not rely only on visual inspection — a tyre can be significantly underinflated without looking obviously flat.

Read the tyre sidewall

A tyre carries useful information. For example, 185/70 R14 89T describes several characteristics: 185 is the nominal tyre width in millimetres, 70 is the aspect ratio, R indicates radial construction, 14 is the rim diameter in inches, 89 is the load index and T is the speed category. Learners do not need to memorise every code. The important lesson is that the tyre must be appropriate for the vehicle's specified size and operating requirements.

Tread is your grip

The tread is designed to provide traction and help move water away from the tyre-road contact area. As tread wears, available grip can reduce, wet-road performance can deteriorate and the tyre becomes less capable of doing its job safely. Look for the tyre's built-in Tread Wear Indicators (TWI). When the tread is worn down to these indicators, the tyre requires replacement according to applicable tyre and manufacturer requirements.

Look beyond the tread

A tyre inspection isn't just about tread depth. Look for cuts, cracks, bulges, puncture damage, exposed or damaged areas, uneven wear and objects embedded in the tyre. A bulge or significant structural damage is not something to ignore. If you see damage or notice unusual vibration, noise or handling behaviour, have the tyre professionally inspected.

Uneven wear is a warning

If one part of a tyre is wearing substantially faster than another, don't simply replace the tyre and forget about it. Uneven wear can indicate issues such as incorrect inflation, wheel alignment, wheel balance, suspension or steering problems, or driving and loading conditions. The tyre may be telling you that something else needs attention.

Tyre age matters too

Tyres deteriorate with time and use. Ageing can be influenced by heat, sunlight, storage conditions, usage and maintenance. Don't judge tyre safety from tread depth alone. Check the tyre manufacturer's recommendations and have older tyres inspected when appropriate.

Your tyre safety routine

Before a long journey, make tyre inspection part of the routine. Pressure — is it at the manufacturer's recommended level? Tread — is it worn or approaching the wear indicators? Condition — any cuts, cracks, bulges or obvious damage? Load — is the vehicle carrying a load within the manufacturer's specified limits? Behaviour — any vibration, pulling, unusual noise or change in handling? If something doesn't look or feel right, don't ignore it.

Pressure. Tread. Condition. Load. Behaviour. Two minutes before a long drive is cheaper than a blowout at highway speed.

Scenario 1 — The fuel-station check

You're preparing for a long highway journey. The tyre looks fine visually, but you haven't checked its pressure for several weeks.

What is the safest approach? A. Judge the pressure by kicking the tyre. B. Add air until the tyre looks firm. C. Check the pressure with a gauge and compare it with the vehicle manufacturer's recommended cold pressure. D. Use the maximum pressure printed on the tyre sidewall.
