What is an airbag?

An airbag is a vehicle safety restraint designed to provide additional protection to occupants during certain types of crashes. It is part of the vehicle's overall occupant-protection system. Modern vehicles can have airbags in different locations, including front airbags, side airbags, curtain airbags, knee airbags and other airbags depending on the vehicle. The exact configuration depends on the vehicle. The important point is: an airbag is an additional layer of protection. It is not a replacement for the seat belt.

How does an airbag work?

An airbag system uses sensors and a control unit to detect crash conditions. When the system determines that deployment is appropriate, the airbag inflates rapidly. Why position matters

Airbags have limits

An airbag cannot compensate for excessive speed, unsafe seating position, no seat belt, a poorly maintained vehicle or dangerous driving behaviour. Technology provides another layer of protection. It does not remove the underlying risk.

After an airbag deploys

If an airbag deploys in a crash, the vehicle's restraint system needs appropriate professional inspection. Do not assume the vehicle is safe simply because it can still be driven. Deployment can involve replacement of airbag components and other parts of the restraint system. Follow the vehicle manufacturer's and qualified repair professional's guidance before returning the vehicle to normal use. Do not attempt to reinstall or repair a deployed airbag yourself.
