Mastering Two-Wheeler Controls
Know every control before you need it, and operate each one smoothly.
Synopsis
A two-wheeler responds directly to the rider's hands and feet. Knowing every control and using it smoothly gives the rider greater control before a situation becomes difficult. This lesson is about what each control does, where it is, and why abrupt inputs create risk.
Why this matters
Riders in India routinely switch between a motorcycle, a scooter, a rented bike and an electric two-wheeler. Control layouts differ, and searching for a switch in traffic — or grabbing the wrong lever — is an avoidable cause of loss of control.

Know your machine
Before riding a two-wheeler, you should know exactly what every control does. A typical motorcycle may have a throttle, front brake lever, clutch lever, gear selector, rear brake pedal, indicators, horn, headlight controls where applicable, an engine kill/run switch and an ignition switch. A scooter may have a throttle, front and rear brake levers, indicators, horn, engine start/stop controls, ignition or keyless controls and other vehicle-specific controls. The exact arrangement varies by vehicle. Never assume that every two-wheeler operates in exactly the same way.
Layouts vary
Two machines that look similar can place brakes, switches and starters in different positions.
The throttle
The throttle controls engine power on most petrol-powered two-wheelers, and small throttle movements can produce noticeable changes in acceleration. This is why smoothness matters. A common beginner mistake is suddenly opening the throttle, which can produce an unexpected surge of acceleration. Use progressive inputs. On an electric two-wheeler, the control may provide motor torque rather than conventional engine acceleration, but the principle remains the same: know how much response the control produces and operate it progressively.

A sudden input produces a surprise. Progressive throttle keeps the vehicle doing what you expect.
Front and rear brake controls
Two-wheelers commonly have separate controls for the front and rear brakes, and the exact arrangement depends on the vehicle. On many motorcycles the right-hand lever operates the front brake and the right-foot pedal operates the rear brake. On many scooters the right-hand lever operates the front brake and the left-hand lever operates the rear brake. Layouts can vary, so do not rely on memory from another vehicle. Before riding an unfamiliar two-wheeler, identify which control operates which brake. Detailed braking technique is covered separately later in this track — here the essential learning is simply to know the controls before you need them.
The clutch
On a conventional manual motorcycle, the clutch allows the rider to temporarily disconnect engine power from the drivetrain, and it is commonly operated using the left-hand lever. The clutch is particularly important when starting from a stop, changing gears, coming to a controlled stop and managing low-speed movement. Use the clutch smoothly — suddenly releasing it can cause the motorcycle to jerk or stall. The exact technique varies between motorcycles, so learn the friction-zone characteristics of the specific machine in a safe practice environment before entering traffic. Automatic scooters generally do not require the rider to operate a manual clutch.
Gears
Manual motorcycles use a gear selector to choose an appropriate gear, and the gear selected affects how the engine delivers power to the rear wheel. The rider should understand which direction the gear selector operates, the gear sequence, how to identify neutral, and when the manufacturer's recommended gear-selection behaviour applies. Do not look down repeatedly to find the gear position while moving — become familiar with the controls before riding. Automatic scooters manage gear selection automatically, so the rider does not have a conventional manual gear selector.
Indicators and horn
Indicators communicate your intended direction to other road users, and the horn is intended to provide an appropriate audible warning when necessary. Neither control should become a reflex without thought. Avoid leaving indicators running after completing a manoeuvre, using the horn aggressively or continuously, and treating the horn as a substitute for slowing down or maintaining awareness. The goal is communication, not noise. Use the controls deliberately.

A horn is a warning, not a right of way. It never replaces slowing down and staying aware.
Engine run/stop controls
Many motorcycles have an engine run/stop switch on the handlebar that allows the rider to stop the engine without using the ignition key. The exact operation varies by motorcycle. Know where the switch is, which position allows the engine to run, how the switch operates and what the dashboard indicates. Do not experiment with unfamiliar controls while moving — understand them while stationary.
Controls must be automatic
The safest time to learn where a control is located is before you need it. If a rider has to look down to find the indicator switch, horn, gear selector, brake control or engine switch, then that control is not yet familiar enough. Spend time learning the vehicle while it is stationary, then practise basic control operation in a safe, controlled environment.

Every second spent looking down for a switch is a second you are not watching traffic.
Smooth inputs matter
Two-wheelers respond quickly to rider inputs. Abrupt throttle inputs, clutch release, gear changes, steering movements or control switching can disturb the vehicle's balance or produce an unexpected response. Smooth does not mean slow — it means deliberate and predictable. A skilled rider does not need to make dramatic control movements during normal riding.
Switching between vehicles
A rider may regularly use different two-wheelers: a motorcycle at home, a scooter at work, a rental motorcycle during travel, an electric scooter on another day. The controls may feel familiar but behave differently. Before riding an unfamiliar vehicle, identify the brake controls, the throttle, the indicators and horn, and the ignition and run controls; understand the gear system if applicable; check the stand and other vehicle-specific controls; and practise basic operation while stationary or in a safe controlled area. Never assume familiarity.

Real-world scenarios
Scenario 1 — The borrowed scooter
You normally ride a motorcycle but borrow a friend's scooter, and you sit down and immediately start riding without checking the controls.
