A two-wheeler responds to small inputs. A relaxed posture, balanced body position and controlled grip help the rider maintain stability and make smoother decisions. Before technique, before traffic craft, comes the way you sit on the machine.
Why this matters
Tense shoulders, locked elbows and a clenched grip make steering jerky and tire the rider quickly. On Indian roads, where surfaces and traffic change constantly, a rider who is physically relaxed has far more capacity to make smooth corrections.

You and the two-wheeler are a system
A two-wheeler does not behave like a car. The rider's body position influences how the vehicle responds. Small inputs through the hands, arms, shoulders, hips and legs can affect the rider's control and stability. That does not mean the rider should constantly think about every movement. The goal is to develop a natural, balanced riding position that works without conscious effort.

Control on a two-wheeler starts with how you sit, not with how hard you hold on.
Start with your head and eyes
Good posture begins with where you look. Keep your head upright, your eyes looking where you want to travel, and your vision directed sufficiently far ahead to understand the road environment. Avoid staring directly at the front wheel or immediately in front of the vehicle. Your hands and body tend to follow your visual focus, so looking ahead gives you more time to recognise changes and make smooth inputs. This lesson is about posture rather than hazard scanning technique — detailed hazard anticipation is developed later in the Academy.
Shoulders and arms
Keep your shoulders relaxed and your arms free of rigidity. A common beginner mistake is becoming tense when the road becomes uncertain. Tension can lead to an excessive grip, jerky steering inputs, faster fatigue, reduced comfort and less precise control. The goal is not to make the arms completely loose — they should remain controlled while allowing the rider to respond naturally to the vehicle.
Tension travels
Tight hands stiffen the arms, the arms stiffen the shoulders, and every steering input becomes abrupt.
The grip
Your hands need enough grip to control the handlebar without squeezing it unnecessarily hard. An overly tight grip can transfer tension into the arms and shoulders, and it can encourage abrupt steering inputs. Use a firm but relaxed grip — controlled, not clenched. Your hands should remain positioned so the controls can be operated naturally. Do not ride with one hand casually removed from the controls unless the situation and vehicle operation specifically require it and it can be done safely. For normal riding, both hands should remain available for control.

Firm enough to steer and operate the controls; loose enough that your forearms are not aching after ten minutes.
Sit centrally
The rider should maintain a stable and balanced position on the seat. Avoid unnecessarily leaning or hanging to one side during normal straight-line riding, and keep your body aligned naturally with the motorcycle or scooter. Your position should allow you to reach the controls comfortably, maintain balance, move naturally when required, keep your vision clear and avoid unnecessary muscle tension. A good riding position should feel stable rather than forced.
Legs and feet
Your legs help provide stability and support. Keep your feet positioned appropriately on the designated footrests or floorboard while the vehicle is moving, and avoid allowing your feet to hang unnecessarily close to the ground while travelling. On a motorcycle, maintain appropriate contact with the vehicle using your legs without gripping so tightly that you create unnecessary tension. Your feet should be ready to respond appropriately when the vehicle comes to a controlled stop.
Don't fight the handlebar
A two-wheeler needs controlled steering inputs. A common mistake is trying to force the handlebar into position, especially when the rider becomes nervous. Avoid sudden jerking, excessive pushing or pulling, locking the arms, and using the handlebar as a support for your entire upper body. Let the vehicle respond to smooth, deliberate inputs. A relaxed rider generally has more capacity to make precise corrections than a rider who is physically rigid.
Posture and fatigue
Poor posture can become a safety issue when a journey gets longer. Unnecessary tension can lead to shoulder discomfort, wrist fatigue, back discomfort, reduced concentration and slower reactions caused by physical fatigue. A comfortable riding position helps the rider remain physically capable of controlling the vehicle throughout the journey. Comfort is therefore not simply about luxury — it can support safer riding.

A rider who is aching and fatigued reacts more slowly. Comfort protects concentration and control on longer rides.
Common posture mistakes
Watch for these habits. Locked elbows — instead, keep the arms controlled but relaxed. Clenched hands — instead, use a firm but relaxed grip. Looking immediately in front of the wheel — instead, keep your vision directed ahead. Slouching or sitting awkwardly — instead, maintain a balanced, comfortable position. Feet positioned carelessly while moving — instead, keep them appropriately positioned on the designated footrests or floorboard. Using the handlebar to support your body weight — instead, maintain your own stable body position.
Your 10-second posture check
Before setting off, ask yourself: HEAD — am I looking ahead? SHOULDERS — are they relaxed? ARMS — are they controlled without being rigid? HANDS — is my grip firm but relaxed? BODY — am I sitting centrally and comfortably? FEET — are they correctly positioned? CONTROL — can I operate the vehicle's controls naturally? This takes only a few seconds. The objective is to make a balanced riding position automatic.
