Using Safe Crossings & Foot Overbridges
The extra minute at a proper crossing is the one that gets you home.
Synopsis
Most pedestrian fatalities in Indian cities happen where a pedestrian tried to cross away from a designated crossing — often just 30–50 metres from a foot-over-bridge or zebra crossing. Safe crossings are engineered to give you the visibility, the right of way and the time to cross safely. Using them is the single most protective habit any pedestrian can build.
Why this matters
You cannot control how fast a vehicle is going, but you can control where and how you cross. Choosing a proper crossing removes the biggest variables from pedestrian risk.

Types of Safe Crossings
Indian roads use several kinds of engineered crossings: zebra crossings (white parallel stripes with pedestrian right of way), pedestrian signals (red/green figures at junctions), pelican and puffin crossings on some arterials, refuge islands mid-road, subways (below the road) and foot-over-bridges (above the road). Each is placed at a spot chosen for visibility, sight distance and pedestrian demand.

The Indian Roads Congress (IRC:103) sets the standard for pedestrian facilities. Foot-over-bridges and subways are placed on high-speed roads where at-grade crossings would be unsafe.
Using a Zebra Crossing
Approach the kerb, stop at the edge, look right–left–right, and make eye contact with the nearest approaching driver. Step onto the crossing only when vehicles have clearly slowed or stopped. Walk — do not run — at a steady pace, staying within the striped area. At night, use crossings that are lit; drivers cannot yield to a pedestrian they cannot see.
Two lanes, two decisions
On a two-lane road, a vehicle in the near lane may stop while one in the far lane does not. After the first lane clears, pause at the lane line and re-check the far lane before continuing.
Pedestrian Signals
A green walking figure means you may cross; a flashing figure means finish crossing but do not start; a red standing figure means wait. Press the pedestrian call button if one is fitted. Never enter the crossing on flashing or red — the vehicle phase is about to start and drivers accelerating from rest are the least likely to see you.
Foot-Over-Bridges and Subways
On high-speed roads, arterials and near expressways, foot-over-bridges and subways are the only safe crossing. They separate pedestrians from vehicles entirely. The extra 60–90 seconds it takes to use them is the whole point — you are trading a small delay for elimination of collision risk. Use ramps or lifts if available; keep to the right on the bridge to let others pass.
Do not cross under a foot-over-bridge
Foot-over-bridges are placed exactly where at-grade crossing is most dangerous. Crossing on the road just below them is the pattern behind many arterial pedestrian fatalities every year.
Refuge Islands and Multi-Stage Crossings
Wide roads often have a raised refuge island mid-way. Treat it as two separate crossings: complete the first half, stop on the island, re-check the second half. This is especially useful for children, seniors and anyone carrying loads — you never have to judge both directions of traffic at once.
Why Jaywalking Is So Dangerous
Mid-block crossings put pedestrians where drivers are not expecting them, often at higher vehicle speeds and often with parked vehicles blocking sightlines. NCRB and MoRTH crash summaries repeatedly show that most fatal urban pedestrian crashes occur within 100 metres of a proper crossing — the pedestrian chose to save a minute. Do not.
Myth
If traffic is light, jaywalking is fine.
Fact
Light traffic often means higher vehicle speeds, and a single fast car in an unexpected place is exactly the scenario that kills pedestrians. Use the crossing regardless of how empty the road looks.

The bridge is 40 metres away
You are in a hurry and the foot-over-bridge is 40 metres from where you are standing on a busy arterial road.
