Lesson 5 of 6

Pedestrian & Cyclist Safety

4 min read ยท India-specific

Pedestrians and cyclists make up nearly 20% of India's road fatalities. Small habits โ€” walking against traffic, using zebra crossings, wearing something reflective at night โ€” prevent thousands of deaths every year.

Walking safely

Use the footpath. If there is none, walk on the right side of the road, facing oncoming traffic. Cross at zebra crossings or foot-over-bridges. Make eye contact with drivers before stepping onto the road.

Cycling in traffic

Ride on the left. Use a bell, front white light, and red rear reflector after dark. Wear a helmet. Signal turns clearly with your arm. Do not weave between cars or ride against traffic.

See and be seen

Wear light or reflective clothing at dawn, dusk, and night. Avoid using headphones while walking or cycling near traffic. Assume a driver has not seen you until you are certain.

Key rules

  • Walk facing traffic when there is no footpath
  • Cross only at zebra crossings or foot-over-bridges
  • Cyclists ride on the left and signal turns
  • Wear reflective/bright clothing after sunset
