Night driving changes the way the road is perceived. Darkness reduces contrast, makes pedestrians and unlit objects harder to detect, increases glare and can make speed and distance more difficult to judge.

Darkness changes the road

A familiar road can become a very different environment after sunset. Darkness can reduce your ability to identify pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, animals, road debris, potholes, road edges and unmarked obstacles. Objects that would be obvious during daylight may blend into the background at night. Night driving therefore requires more deliberate observation.

Seeing is not the same as being able to see clearly

Your headlights illuminate only part of the environment. Beyond that illuminated area, information is limited. A pedestrian wearing dark clothing may be difficult to detect. An unlit vehicle may blend into the surroundings. A damaged road surface may not become obvious until you are close to it. Do not assume: 'I have headlights, so I can see everything.' Your usable visibility is limited by the road, lighting, weather, vehicle condition and surrounding environment.

Reduced contrast

At night, objects may not stand out clearly from their surroundings. For example: a person wearing dark clothing near a dark roadside; a motorcycle without strong rear lighting; an animal crossing an unlit road; a road hazard with no reflective marking. These hazards can become visible much later than they would during daylight. This is why night driving requires anticipation without relying on assumptions.

Headlight glare

Oncoming headlights can temporarily reduce your ability to see. This is especially noticeable with bright headlights, poorly adjusted headlights, high beams, and wet or reflective road surfaces. When facing glare, avoid staring directly into the approaching headlights, reduce speed appropriately, keep your vehicle positioned safely within your lane, continue using the road edge and other reliable visual references, and allow your eyes time to recover after the vehicle passes. Do not respond to glare by staring directly at the light.

High beam etiquette

High beams can improve visibility on sufficiently dark roads when used appropriately. But they can also create serious glare for other road users. Dip high beams when approaching oncoming vehicles, vehicles you are following, and areas where pedestrians or other road users may be affected. Do not use high beam simply because the road is dark. The purpose of vehicle lighting is to improve safety, not to create unnecessary glare for others.

Pedestrians after dark

Pedestrians can become particularly difficult to see at night. Pay extra attention near markets, bus stops, villages, residential areas, schools and colleges, unlit roads, roadside shops and parking areas. A person may be visible only after entering the area illuminated by your headlights. Do not assume that an apparently empty roadside is actually clear.

Motorcycles and bicycles

Two-wheelers can be difficult to detect at night because of their smaller size. Pay attention to small rear lights, reflective clothing, vehicles approaching from side roads, motorcycles changing position, and bicycles without adequate lighting. Avoid assuming that a dark area beside your vehicle is empty. A smaller road user can occupy the same space that appears clear from a distance.

Judging speed and distance

Darkness can make it harder to estimate how fast another vehicle is approaching, how far away a vehicle actually is, and how quickly you are closing on another road user. This becomes especially important when overtaking, turning or entering intersections. Do not make a manoeuvre based on a quick visual estimate when the available information is limited. Give yourself more time to assess what you are seeing.

Intersections at night

Intersections can become difficult to read after dark. You may have poorly visible lane markings, unlit side roads, pedestrians crossing unexpectedly, motorcycles approaching from different directions, and vehicles with poorly visible lighting. Approach intersections with enough caution to identify what is actually happening. A green signal does not make hidden road users disappear.

Keep your vehicle ready for night driving

Before night journeys, check headlights, tail lights, brake lights, indicators, windscreen, mirrors, wipers, and number-plate illumination where applicable. Dirty or damaged lighting equipment can reduce how well you see and how well others see you. Keep the windscreen and mirrors clean. Small maintenance issues can become visibility problems after dark.

Don't outdrive your headlights

There is a simple principle for night driving: do not travel faster than your available visibility allows you to respond safely. If your headlights illuminate only a limited distance, that distance represents the information available to you. A hazard outside the illuminated area may become visible only when you are already close to it. Reduce speed when road lighting and visibility are poor.

Know when night driving is too difficult

Night driving becomes more demanding when combined with poor road lighting, heavy traffic, glare, rain, fog, unfamiliar roads, driver fatigue or poor vehicle lighting. If multiple risks combine, adapt accordingly. If visibility becomes too poor for safe driving, the safest decision may be to stop at a suitable safe location or delay the journey.
