Driving in Rain

Rain changes the road. Your driving must change with it.

Synopsis

Rain does more than make the road wet. It can reduce tyre grip, increase stopping distance, obscure road markings, reduce visibility and hide hazards beneath standing water.

Rain changes the road

A road that is safe in dry weather can behave differently when it becomes wet. Rain affects tyre grip, braking, steering, visibility, road markings, surface hazards and the behaviour of other road users. The important point is not simply "drive carefully in rain" — it is to understand what has changed and adapt your driving accordingly.

Wet roads reduce grip

Tyres need contact with the road surface to provide traction. Water between the tyre and road reduces the grip available for braking, acceleration, cornering and steering corrections. The harder you ask the vehicle to change direction or speed, the more that grip matters. Smooth inputs are essential — avoid sudden braking, sudden steering and sharp acceleration when the surface is slippery.

Why braking changes

A wet road can require more distance to stop safely, which matters most when traffic ahead slows unexpectedly. Instead of waiting until the last moment to brake, anticipate changes earlier and brake smoothly. Do not assume that because your brakes worked normally in dry conditions, the same stopping performance is available on a wet road — your tyres and the road surface decide how much braking force actually reaches the road.

Hydroplaning / aquaplaning

Aquaplaning occurs when a layer of water causes the tyres to lose sufficient contact with the road surface. Steering and braking response can become severely reduced. Warning situations include standing water, water-filled ruts, heavy rainfall, poorly drained roads and high speed through water. The risk rises when speed is too high for the amount of water present, so the safest strategy is prevention: reduce speed before reaching significant standing water.

Speed is the variable you control

You cannot control how much water is on the road, but you can control how fast you enter it. Slow down before the water, not in it.

If the vehicle aquaplanes

If you feel the vehicle suddenly become light or the steering response change unexpectedly, do not panic. Avoid sudden hard braking, sudden steering movements and aggressive acceleration. Instead, ease off the accelerator smoothly, keep the steering direction steady, allow the tyres to regain contact with the road, and make corrections gradually once normal grip returns. The exact response varies with vehicle and conditions, but sudden inputs make loss of control worse.

Standing water hides hazards

Water on the road may hide what is underneath — potholes, broken road surfaces, open drains, road edges, debris and uneven surfaces. A puddle may look shallow but gives no reliable indication of its actual depth. Do not drive quickly through water simply because another vehicle did so; different vehicles can experience very different outcomes.

Water creates secondary risks

Heavy vehicles moving through water can create large waves, and spray can temporarily block your view entirely. Pedestrians and two-wheeler riders may also move unpredictably to avoid flooded areas. Watch for sudden lane changes, motorcycles steering around puddles, pedestrians stepping into traffic, vehicles throwing spray and water flowing across the road. Rain changes how everyone uses the road — expect that behaviour to change.

Visibility matters

Rain makes it harder to see vehicles, pedestrians, motorcycles, lane markings, signs and traffic signals. Keep the windscreen clear and use the vehicle's appropriate lights according to conditions and applicable rules. Avoid relying on hazard lights as a substitute for normal driving lights while moving. If visibility becomes severely restricted, reduce speed and consider stopping at a safe location until conditions improve.

Wipers, windows and demisting

Before the monsoon season, check that wiper blades are effective, washer fluid is available, windows can be cleared, demisting works correctly and headlights and brake lights function. During rain, internal condensation can also reduce visibility — use the ventilation or demisting function rather than continuing with a partially obscured windscreen. Clear vision is part of vehicle control.

Speed is a decision, not just a number

A posted speed limit is not always the speed appropriate for current conditions. Heavy rain, standing water and poor visibility may require far less. The correct question is: can I safely control and stop the vehicle in the conditions I can currently see? If the answer is uncertain, reduce speed. Do not let the posted maximum become a target.

Indian monsoon conditions

Monsoon driving introduces hazards beyond ordinary wet roads. Depending on the location, drivers may encounter waterlogging, poor drainage, potholes hidden by water, mud or debris, fallen branches, washed-out road markings, sudden flooding, two-wheelers seeking shelter and pedestrians moving unpredictably. A familiar route can become a different driving environment during heavy rain — do not assume yesterday's conditions exist today.

Know when not to continue

Sometimes the safest decision is to delay or stop the journey. If water levels are rising rapidly, visibility is severely restricted or the road ahead cannot be assessed safely, do not attempt to prove that your vehicle can make it through. Find a safe place to stop or choose a safer route when possible. A flooded road is not an invitation to test vehicle capability.
