A road crash does not always end when the vehicles stop moving. Fuel leaks, smoke, damaged electrical systems and hazardous cargo can turn a crash site into a second emergency. This lesson teaches you how to recognise fire and fuel hazards, keep a safe distance and get professional help without becoming another casualty.

Bystanders are frequently injured at crash scenes because they approach a burning or leaking vehicle before trained responders arrive. Recognising the hazard early protects you, the casualties and everyone else on the road.

A crash can become a second emergency
A road crash doesn't always end when the vehicles stop moving. A damaged vehicle can introduce new hazards: fuel leakage, burning fuel, smoke, electrical damage, damaged batteries, hot engine components, LPG or other pressurised systems, and hazardous materials being carried as cargo. A person who stops to help can become a second casualty by entering an unsafe area.
The first rule
Don't become part of the emergency. A rescuer who is injured cannot help anyone.
Why fuel is dangerous
Petrol and other fuels can create a serious fire hazard after a crash, and the danger is not limited to visible flames. Fuel can leak onto the road, the underside of a vehicle, nearby vehicles, drains and soil. Fuel vapour can ignite when it reaches an ignition source, so a crash scene with a fuel leak should be treated as a potential fire hazard even when there is no visible fire. Indian petroleum safety guidance stresses preventing petroleum products from entering drains or public roads, and taking precautions around ignition sources.

There's no fire, so the leaking vehicle is safe to approach.
Fact
Fuel vapour spreads invisibly and can ignite from a distant spark. No visible flame does not mean no fire risk.
Warning signs to look for
From a safe position, look for visible flames, smoke from the engine compartment, underside or passenger compartment, a visible liquid leak or strong fuel smell, exposed or damaged electrical components, and any sign that the vehicle is carrying hazardous material. You do not need to identify the exact substance before moving yourself away from danger.
Observe from distance
Everything you need to report can be seen from a safe distance. Walking closer adds risk without adding useful information.
Create distance
If you see fire, smoke or a suspected fuel leak, do not approach the vehicle just because someone appears to need help. Move yourself away from the immediate hazard, keep other people away, stay clear of smoke, and avoid standing downhill or in the path of leaking liquid. The correct distance depends on the situation, the material involved, wind, terrain and instructions from emergency responders — there is no single safe distance that applies to every crash fire or fuel spill.
Do not create an ignition source
At a suspected fuel leak or vehicle fire, avoid anything that could introduce ignition. Do not smoke, light a match or lighter, use a flame to inspect a leak, create unnecessary sparks, stand close to the leaking area, or attempt amateur repairs. Your job as a bystander is not to fight the fire or repair the vehicle — it is to protect yourself, warn others and get professional help.
What about the vehicle engine?
A crashed vehicle may have damaged electrical, fuel or mechanical systems. Do not reach into a badly damaged vehicle to operate controls unless you can do so safely and there is no immediate hazard. If the vehicle is burning, smoking heavily or leaking fuel, do not enter it. A person trapped inside needs trained emergency responders, unless immediate action is required to escape an otherwise unavoidable life-threatening hazard.
Call for emergency assistance
In India, 112 is the pan-India emergency response number for police, fire and rescue, health and other emergency assistance. The Government's Emergency Response Support System also supports emergency requests through multiple channels. Stay calm and report WHERE (exact location, road or highway name, direction of travel, nearest landmark, kilometre marker or exit), WHAT (road crash, vehicle fire, smoke, fuel leakage, suspected hazardous material), WHO (number of vehicles, approximate number of injured or trapped people) and DANGER (fire, fuel spill, smoke, tanker or hazardous-material vehicle, traffic still moving around the crash). Don't hang up until the operator has what they need.

Reporting the danger explicitly — fire, smoke, fuel, hazardous cargo — changes which units are dispatched. Never leave it out.
Hazardous-material vehicles
A crash involving a tanker or vehicle carrying hazardous material can be substantially more dangerous. You may see warning placards, hazard labels, tanker bodies, chemical containers or unusual fumes. Do not approach the vehicle to investigate the substance. Move away, keep others away and tell emergency responders what you can safely observe. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways guidance for hazardous-material transport recognises fire, explosion, LPG release and motor-spirit fire or explosion as serious accident scenarios requiring specific safety planning.
The most dangerous mistake
One of the most dangerous assumptions is: "There is no fire yet, so it's safe." A fuel leak, smoke or damaged vehicle can change rapidly. The safer approach is a fixed sequence: Recognise the hazard, Distance yourself from it, Warn others without putting yourself in danger, Call emergency services, and Wait for trained responders.

Memorise the sequence. Under stress, a rehearsed order of actions is what keeps bystanders safe.
Real-world scenarios
Smoke and a puddle under the bonnet
You are travelling on a highway and see a crashed car. There is smoke coming from the front and you notice liquid underneath the vehicle. Your first instinct is to run over and help.

Slow down safely so you don't cause another crash. Keep your distance — do not walk toward the leaking vehicle. Warn approaching traffic only if you can do so without entering danger. Keep other people away. Call 112, clearly report the smoke and suspected fuel leak, and follow the operator's instructions.

A tanker has overturned on a state highway. You can see hazard placards on the side and there is an unusual smell in the air.
